Cantilever racking systems are specifically designed and build to store bulky and long items. These storage systems are generally used in manufacturing facilities, lumberyards and warehouses. The basic structure of the rack consists of uprights, braces, and racking arms.

The racks come with welded columns that are near their bases making them structurally stable. ‘X’ shaped braces and strong ladders between the uprights offer lateral stability. The tapering reduces shear stress and forces the material to glide along the flat surface.

Depending up on the weight that can be stored on these storage systems, they racks can be classified as;

Structural racks for heavy duty: Heavy Duty Cantilever Racking   systems are generally fixed to walls or floors, as they need to store goods up to a weight of 6,600 pounds on each arm. This storage system works best for heavy items like furniture. The racks are made in such a way that has good structural support to hold medium to extra heavy duty loads.

I-beam racks for medium duty: these racks cannot be secured to walls. They are freestanding. Goods can be stored or retrieved from these shelves easily as they are accessible from all sides. A weight up to 20,000 pounds can be stored on these shelves. 

Rolling racks for light duty: Light duty merchandise is stored on these racks. They include items as pipes, tubes, plastics, which can be loaded on these racks easily as they are very light weight and do not require any special carrying devices. Most of these racks come with wheel system, which can be locked to ensure safety, when they are used only for storage purpose. Maximum weight of 500 pounds can be stored on these shelves.

While choosing the racking system for the warehouse, the owners should be sure of the type of goods they wish to store, if they wish to store goods that are of a definite shape, they could go for pallet systems.
